First day serving at DUCK.  Downtown Urban Community Kids, Kidshttp://www.duckkids.org/  is a Christian after school program for inner-city children; reaching out and pouring out the love of Christ. The children as all children are great teachers. They welcomed me and put me right to work. Today I met 6 year old Ben. He taught me humility, perseverance, and gratitude. Ben has trouble reading in English, but we worked on that today; he smiled and kept trying. At the end of the story he was so excited he wanted to read another book.

Unlike me, when I struggle with something like math, I just want to finish it, and never do it again.  I have to admit, I don’t smile in the midst of it either!

Today 6 year old Ben taught me:  The little things we take for granted are huge steps, milestones. He persevered through his struggle with a smile, and was victorious.  My lesson learned today was through a grateful heart, persevere and hope in the Lord’s unfailing love,  all things are possible.

Day 2 at DUCK: As I was cleaning up the kitchen to get it ready for our cooking class next Tuesday, I met 12 year old Damien. He kind of reminded me of my son, Ray.  He was very helpful and willing to get his hands dirty. I spent 28 years cleaning, and what I was running from, the Lord showed me my willingness to clean for these little kings and queens was an honor, not something to dread or be ashamed of.

My lesson today: Be willing to be a cheerful giver, and serve others. Jesus put on an apron, and I am not greater than my Master.  Whatever gift the Lord has given you, give it back to Him so He can pour it out to others through you. Duck is in need of  more volunteers, a stove, and a refrigerator, and I pray the Lord will provide.

Little Things

I always feel overwhelmed when too many little things begin adding up in  a single day, but this morning while having a cup of coffee a little ant took a bite of me! This little creature is so small, I didn’t see it, I just felt it, OUCH!

Lord, I pray for wisdom to know what is important today.  Take away the sting of those who pursue me with lying lips. May my sisters,  Gladness, Wisdom and Hope walk with me today.  Help me to surrender tomorrow into Your Hands, and open my eyes to Your Presence in everyone, everywhere. May Your Love pour forth. Psalm 31, Jeremiah 31.
